Is It the 2nd Most Depressing Day Of The Year?

January 3, 2010 by

Today 3rd January 2010 could possibly be the second most depressing day of the year?

If like most of the population, you’ve taken down the Christmas decorations, You’ve stepped onto the scales for the first time since before Christmas, and (like most of us) you’ve put on between 3-6lbs, and to top it all it’s back to work on Monday 4th! it’s no wonder you’re depressed today. There’s all this negativity flying around and you’re all suffering from the post Christmas blues.

Not that I wish to make it worse, but if you’re asking why is it the SECOND most depressing day of the year? well that’s because there’s worse to come.

Last year it was Monday 19th Jan highlighted as the most depressing day of of 2009, this year psychologists expect Monday 25th as being the most depressing day of 2010, mainly because from the list I gave earlier, you can also add credit card bills that start to arrive through the post, and perhaps the weather is worse than it is now, plus there’s nothing really to look forward to until say the clocks “spring” forward at the end of March?

To be honest, most people are more depressed about their weight, and all the other things just make it worse. So want can be gone to stop you succumbing to the dark side and stopping the world crashing in on you? actually there’s a lot that can be done to alleviate your depression?

Scientist have discovered that we all have a “willpower muscle” that can be developed through challenging it to achieve goals and objectives, like getting down to the gym more often, or NOT having that 3rd course from the sweet trolley.

Coupled with the fact that It has been proven that you can easily develop habit forming actions that if repeated in short succession more that 3 times, that tasks can form a habit.

So for example, It’s habit to have a biscuit with a cup of coffee, try with a piece of fruit instead (using your “willpower muscle”, you’ve just saved 200 calories each time you do it, and then do it 3 times for it to become habit forming and it will stick in your head, do it often enough, you just won’t think about it you’ll just carry on doing it.

Furthermore, take it slow when eating, Greek scientists have proven that by eating food fast negates the affect of your satiety hormones, this is the hormone tells your brain that your stomach has had enough. Take it slow, your satiety hormones kick in and you feel more satisfied, and you eat less. One further benefit of this action is that chewing your food more allows your body to digest it better therefore improving your metabolism.

So finally my uplifting message to you all is that for you to feel better all you need is some small successes, and that my friends comes from perseverance and will power, its not easy, but your mind set is key, don’t go on a diet thinking that after 3 weeks you just revert back to where you were post-Christmas, instead think of it long term, life changing habit forming part of your make up. It is only if you achieve your mind set that you’ll succeed in getting over the you Christmas blues, or indeed any thing else in life you would like to succeed at.

If you need encouragement or a group of like minded individuals try out Weight Watchers for example who will encourage you to make that change.

Good luck and happy New Year for 2010
