Fair Isle Knits Are They Super Trendy Or Just Another Christmas Jumper?

In the extremely cold winter weather we’ve been having so far people naturally gravitate to the comforting cosiness of boots, coats, hats and scarves as well as woolly Jumpers of course. But this winter there is one woolly trend that has been talked about more than most, that of fair Isle knits.
Fair Isle is a common enough term, but for the lay person do you actually know what Fair Isle means or where it is, and as long as it keeps you warm, do you care? As the fashionista with her finger on the pulse I’m sure you do.
The term Fair Isle is derived for the Island from which the techniques originated, a tiny Island located in the cluster of Sheltand islands North of Scotland. Traditionally the Fair Isle technique is used to create patterns with multiple colours, these patterns have a limited palette of five or so colours and use only two colours per row and limit the length of a run of any particular colour.
Sadly however, there is only one manufacturer of Fair Isle knits left on the Island from which the technique originates that of Fair Isle Crafts Limited who produce beautiful made to order hand crafted garments. That’s not to say that any manufacturer who does not have itself based in the Shetlands does not produce quality items.
The technique is quite distinctive in its look, and done well it can be regarded as it is currently as very stylish on trend fashion, a poor variant of the style is just like another unwanted Christmas Jumper that some distant auntie keeps buying year after year.
But Fair Isle is not just limited to Jumpers either as its a knitted pattern, it can incorporate just about any women’s fashion clothing including Fair Isle Knitted Dresses, hats, gloves, scarves…

exchanging clothes is the swish thing to do?

Apparently, the newest craze to hit towns across the UK is “swishing”.
Swishing is essentially a swap shop for stylish women’s clothes that have been bought but not used, in a fun, party type environment which allows women to socialise with each other at the same time.
I’m sure every one at some point has bought an item of clothing which sits in the wardrobe, never been worn collecting dust. Well Swishing gives you the opportunity to swap 4-5 stylish items of clothing that you may not want with 4-5 items of stylish clothing that other people may not require.
Resulting in a cheap way to get some fashionable clothing and be environmentally aware.
The rules are that every lady must bring 5 items of clothes or accessories that she feels proud to hand on.
The initiative is being hailed as an easy and fun way to get a bargain wardrobe, whilst at the same time being kind to the planet and environmentally friendly.
Women up and down the UK are sorting through their wardrobes looking for dresses, shoes, skirts jeans,accessories, coats, in fact almost any type of apparel they can lay their hands on in the hope they can swap them for a trendy item of clothing that they’ll be proud to wear.

My-Wardrobe see sales rocket

Online retailer www.my-wardrobe.com has reported sales that are sky rocketing.
www.my-wardrobe.com Reported a tripling of sales orders last month compared with the previous year.
The company who describes themselves as the “accessible luxury” company sell designer Women’s dresses, shoes and Accessories from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana and Vivienne Westwood. they achieved £557,000 of orders in December 2008 against £180,000 in December 2007.
Like for like sales for the year grew from £884K to £2.56M for the year.
In January www.my-wardrobe.com plan to launch a menswear website which will include designers such as Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren.
Sarah Curran Chief Executive said that “2008 was a phenomenal year for www.my-wardrobe.com”
2009 “is going to be tough for everyone, but our focus will be to improve our product”.
