Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue, X Factor and Fashion

August 21, 2009 by ·

Yes – The X-factor starts its marathon run on Saturday, but with Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue going head to head in the fashion stakes who is likely to get the votes this time around?

During last years run, Cheryl Cole emerged as the real winner and the one with the true X-factor, and as a result she became a household name by carrying off the girl next door appeal that helped her catch the hearts of the nation, she displayed the warmth that instantly made her a new kind of people’s princess.

Alexandra Burke, Her protege, won the competition, Cheryl’s wardrobe was obsessed about by all the fashion journalist, and she landed the “fashionista” title herself with the weekly display of fantastic sparkly dresses, big fluttering eyelashes and stacked-up, backcombed, lacquered mega-locks.

With her popularity rating getting higher every week she found herself on the cover of Vogue, women and girls across the land copied what she wore in their droves, it was truly her year.

During the build up to the new season, Cheryl has upped her fashion game, reflecting the most up to date autumn trends as she goes.

She has dazzled auditions in recent weeks with a selection of spindly heels and platforms, currently Cheryl’s footwear of choice, matched with leather trousers: the fabric of the season. This outfit said vamp. It said camp. It said Cheryl is back in X-factor mode!

The vamp looked has alternated with the girlie look of short, very structured “power dresses”. Again this has Cheryl bang up to date in-line with this autumn’s 80s look, which Cheryl also echoes in blouses featuring a shelf-like shoulder detail, the trend of the season – remember dynasty? This look is expected to be expanded to a cocktail-hour influence, with tons of futuristic looking jewellery and makeup to match.

Word is that Cheryl has been “styling herself” for the auditions, and to prove her designer credentials she’s been choosing labels with edge such as Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen and Preen. Dannii, on the other hand has gone for one too many one-shouldered dresses, which instantly looks dated and last year.

Cheryl has moved on in strides updating her hair shade also with a sparky russet, while Dannii on the other hand has a new look bob.

If Cheryl keeps the hair extensions under control and maintains her look, she’s got a very good chance of nailing it in the X-factor fashion stakes again this year.

However can you consider that perhaps Dannii Minogue is more stylish than Cheryl Cole? She’s lived in her sisters shadow for so long now, so when she gets the opportunity to be a judge on the biggest TV show in the UK and her share of the spotlight, yet another pretender claims the adoration that Dannii so fiercely covets.

Yes – this season Dannii is fighting back. She has upped the ante with a new bob which flatters her face, it’s glossy, it’s grown up, it’s sophisticated. She’s ditched the Botox that gave her face that waxy expressionless look, and has proclaimed to Grazia recently “I’m done with Botox,” even poking fun at herself, adding, “For The X Factor, it is actually quite useful to be able to have facial expressions.” A relaxed warm smile has been rediscovered.

So while Last year Cheryl was constantly one step ahead in the style stakes, this year Dannii is hoping that she can capitalise on Cheryl just repeating the same old formula and doing the same old thing, in the process leaving the fashion door wide open for Dannii to jump right through?

danniminogue xfactor 199x300 Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue, X Factor and Fashion

Dannii is trying to be the grown up and sophisticated to the Cheryl’s girlie girl look. Like Cheryl, Dannii has adopted the 80s look also, but mixing it up with rock chick which again is very NOW, only let down by the afore mentioned one-shoulder dresses.

She’s also kept accessories very simple, with a less is more attitude, Dannii has had her bouts of extravagance in the past which perhaps she’s grown out of, I like to think she dispensing with the mutton dressed as lamb attitude that she has formerly illustrated with her wardrobe, perhaps she starting to grow up and become a more mature individual or even taken some tips off her big sister?

So what ever you think of either of the pair, one things for certain the x-factor will be interesting viewing, regardless of why you watch it, the performers or the fashion show that going on in the background?

Who’s your favourite, give us your opinions on Cheryl and Danni in our comments section below, we’re interested in your opinion.

GIVe:Women’s Clothing New Brand

August 6, 2009 by ·

Fashion entrepreneur George Davies is to open the first of his new GIVe Women’s Clothing Brand stores at Bluewater shopping centre in Kent.

Davies has reputedly pumped millions of pounds of his own money in the new Women’s Clothing brand he first discussed in 2005 when on a short break from his work for Marks & Spencer.

GIVe will open the first 2,300 sq ft Bluewater store on October 1, which will be closely followed by the launch of a 2,500 sq ft store in Liverpool One, and a 2,300 sq ft store in Sheffield shopping centre Meadowhall later that month.

There are expected to be up to 6 stand-a-lone Women’s Clothing stores, with up to 20 concessions in major department stores.

Davies, who originally founded Next back in the 80′s aswell as creating and putting his name to Asda’s George label, is also responsible for the Marks & Spencer’s Per Una sub-brand.

GIVe according to Davies is aiming his new Women’s Clothing brand at Females aged 30 and over and has said the range will be “affordable luxury”. It will be priced at similar level to high street businesses Karen Millen and Whistles.

It is understood that Davies is growing increasing exasperated with the handling of Per Una by Marks & Spencer’s Boss Stuart Rose who has moved it’s headquarters recently from Gloucestershire to London.

The GIVe brand was inspired by Davies’ grandaughter Evie who overcame a rare heart defect.

Katy Perry Steal her Style At Lipsy

August 5, 2009 by ·

Maverick Pop performer Katy Perry is as much famous for her quirky, retro-inspired fashion sense as she is for her mischievous lyrics in her songs and eccentric behaviour. The singer who’s debut hit was the controversial ‘I kissed a girl’ certainly knows how to make herself the centre of attention, mixing kitsch prints and statement colours with stylish cuts to create a look that’s both elegant and individual.

Katy recently made herself the center of attention during one of her recent performances by donning a hot-pink mac and striking pink leopard-print dress.

Neons and animal prints are two of this season’s hottest trends. You can get a Katy Perry inspired look by following these tips from Lipsy with their animal print knitted dress or strapless bustle dress and keep the colours strong with the pleated collar mac.

The singer also keep the paparazzi on theoir toes in equally eye-catching otfits when not on stage, such as this tulip-shaped dress with fitted bodice. Get the look with Lipsy’s strapless jewelled pocket dress.
For casual off-stage style, Katy opts for the trendy and relaxed rock-chic look, mixing a grey tee-dress with an earthy-brown leather jacket. Check out Lipsy’s very own ruffle tunic and asymmetric biker jacket, and accessorise with rouched leggings and their rivet tassle bag for rock-star style with extra attitude. www.my-wardrobe.com Online shopping Mannequin or Models?

During London Fashion Network’s e-merchandising event some weeks ago, there was apparently a debate on the use of models in online retail.

The general consensus was that as guys need a better idea of how clothes fit, models work best for displaying men’s clothing online.

Whereas for women’s online shopping the use of models may work against the e-tailer, as females take in more that just the clothes during their decision making process and features such as Hair colour, age and body type could be a determining factor and apparently put shoppers off.

But in e-commerce no-one has the monopoly on what’s right and retailing rules are there to be broken.

Lauren Stevenson, PR Director at www.my-wardrobe.com says “using a model versus a mannequin shows the fit, cut and even the proportion of accessories a lot clearer”.

As a savvy fashion e-tailer careful to appeal to its core customer www.my-wardrobe.com was diligent in selecting models “the customer could relate to”.
