Debenhams Chocolate Animal Print Dress Help Profits

April 24, 2009 by ·

Debenhams Chocolate Animal Print Dress Help ProfitsA £60 Chocolate animal print one shoulder dress helped Debenhams lift the gloom on the high street as the department store surprised the city by announcing a 10% jump in profits.

The  Chocolate animal print one shoulder dress designed by Julien McDonald who features as one of the “Designers at Debenhams”  sold out even before the dress had been officially launched.

The reason behind the dresses success is that the dress itself , an ideal going out dress is, at £60 a much cheaper alternative to those other similiar fashion dresses worn by the stars  recently at red carpet events in Hollywood, Cannes and London.

Michael Sharpe, Deputy Chief Executive of Debenhams declared that the shops own label designers were proving very popular during the downturn. Regarding the Julien McDonald designed dress, He said “We’ve never seen a reaction like this before. Again, we are putting this and the success of our designer ranges down to the ‘recessionista’ effect.”

The strategy of Debenhams recently has been to bolster it own brand or in house labels such as its “Designer at Debenhams” branding which feature for example the likes of Jasper Conran and Jeff Banks as well as the afore mentioned Julien McDonald, at the expense of concessions in store. This was further underlined earlier in the year after the department store bought the Principles and the Mosiac fashion brands after it went into administration in February 2009.

Debenhams are the latest store on the high street to report better than expected results after discount clothes retailers Primark and Peacocks posted encouraging results.

However as for green shoots of recovery, they seem still to be a long way off after the latest victim came to light with the announcement that Bay Trading company was to enter a voluntary administration arrangement.

The Ultimate in Recession Dressing

Debenhams Sale is now on All Year Round

What’s the worst part of shopping in the sales? is it being trampled on by too many people in too smaller space, is it that the prices weren’t worth the effort, or after the initial stampede, there’s only a handful of items left in sizes that don’t fit you?

Well our friends at Debenhams have a novel idea in order to help alleviate the problem.

Basically, the problem with sales are that you have to be at the front of the queue to get the very best bargains, and if you’re NOT part of that initial rush of people all the best products are sold by the time you follow on behind, right?

So Debenhams thought it was a good idea to devote part of their website to a Clearance Section which is open all year round, which means that the Debenham’s Sale is on 24 hours, 365 days of the year, Yippee I here you cry!

Why not try it out for yourself Visit Debenham’s Clearance Section, and see what you can pick up. Once you’ve done that please return and comment on what you’ve got and whether you think it was a bargain, alternatively if you’ve come up blank, please comment and tell our customers who will value your feedback

Do You Think Slim Women Are Sexier?

April 19, 2009 by ·

Do You Think Slim Women Are Sexier?

Going off subject a little, and taking a break from writing about women’s clothing and fashion for a brief second or two.

I thought I would bring to your attention a new book which challenges the stereotypical views we have towards the opposite sex, and the labels we give to certain groups of people or generalities we make towards them. I thought it was fun to write article about it, or at least part of it.

The Book is called “Women can’t Park, Men can’t Pack Do You Think Slim Women Are Sexier?“, written by Psychologist Geoff Rolls, it takes a closer look at some of the common assumptions behind certain groups of people to see whether these labels we give each other are true or merely anecdotal.

The book attempts to answer certain questions, as well as exploring the psychology surrounding some widely held stereotypical views, such as Can Women Park a car? Why do all girls Like Pink? Are All Librarians Dowdy bespectacled Spinsters? and Are all WAG’s Stupid?

The book examines the background to all the above questions and more, delving into the source of and history of these stories and to explore in some depth where the tales actually come from and whether there’s any truth in them.

With the media full of either size zero model exposés, or obesity nightmare stories, we picked up on perhaps one of the more topical of these questions, and highlighted whether slim women are actually any sexier?

Size Zero models are used in the fashion industry, apparently, according to Carl Lagerfeld of Chanel, because clothes actually hang better on skinny models; whether thts right or wrong a lot of women aspire to this look because they think it is attractive, but given a preference, is the skinny model any sexier than say a larger women?

AS with all things fashion, the the answer is very subjective, there are numerous studies showing that the WHR (Waist Hips Ratio) is one of the key indicator to use as a measurement.

One of the most recent of these studies has been made using both male and female participants, aged between 18 to 60. They were asked to rank in order of attractiveness 12 line drawings representing the four levels of WHR at 3 levels of body weight; Underweight, Normal and Overweight.

The body shape with a normal silhouette and a WHR score of 0.7 was highlighted to be the most attractive. this shape as represented by the WHR ranking was the one that defined the curviness of the female body most, with shapely breasts, broad hips set against a narrow waist, in other words, the classic hourglass figure.

The commonly held belief here is that the classic womanly figure is commonly associated with fertility which has evolved over millions of years of the human race, and is a primal instinct by men who seem to sub-consciously assess a women’s potential to bear children as the prime criteria of attractiveness.

However, in another influential study, it was actual images of women dressed identically, some manipulated to show variations in WHR as well as in BMI (Body Mass Index) which is widely regarded as the standard measure of weight against Height.

In this study, It was found that small variations in BMI had a large influence upon how attractive the women was seen to be, and that these BMi alterations made a greater impact on attractiveness than that of the corresponding changes in WHR.

This leads us to believe that BMI is actually a more accurate method of determining Female attractiveness.

The World Health Organisation recommends that the healthy range as measured in BMI is between 18.5 and 25. In the UK the BMI Score that was seen to be the most attractive in Women was 20.85.

The good news therefore is that whether measured by WHR or BMI, the conclusion is that Skinny women aren’t necessarily the sexist.
